Lucy is drawn to light on water, clouds and woods where such subjects invite the subconscious mind to find analogies in paint for deeper perceptions of nature. She uses drawings made while standing in front of nature as a starting point then recreates these observations with layers of gestural oil paint in the studio. Often looking for oddness in marks and forms that clash or bind together, she enjoys the tension between the flattening freedom of abstraction and the need to invite the viewer into a readable space. Having been a portrait painter for many years, Lucy completed an MA in printmaking at the Cambridge School of Art in 2011. The printmaking opened up a sense of freedom in terms of mark making and imagination, which Lucy has brought into her landscape painting. Lucy’s studio is in North Hertfordshire.
